Common questions
Is Yatzy free to play online here?+
Yes, completely free with no account, no download and no app. The game runs in your browser on any device. You can play against the computer or share a device for two-player pass-and-play.
How many dice and rolls are there?+
Five six-sided dice, and up to three rolls per turn. You must roll all five on the first roll, then you may hold any dice and re-roll the rest up to twice more.
How many categories are there?+
Fifteen: six in the upper section (Ones through Sixes) and nine in the lower section (One Pair, Two Pairs, Three and Four of a Kind, Small and Large Straight, Full House, Chance, and Yatzy). Each is used exactly once.
How does the upper bonus work?+
If your upper section (Ones to Sixes) totals 63 or more, you earn a flat 50-point bonus. Sixty-three equals three of each number, so it is a realistic target worth planning your upper play around.
What scores a Yatzy?+
Five dice showing the same number scores a flat 50 points in the Yatzy box. It is the single highest-value category and the rarest to roll.
What is the difference between Yatzy and Yahtzee?+
Yatzy is the traditional public-domain Scandinavian game with pair categories, fixed straight scores of 15 and 20, a sum-based full house, and a 50-point bonus. Yahtzee is Hasbro's trademarked version with different fixed scores and a 35-point bonus.
Can I play with a friend?+
Yes. Pick two-player pass-and-play and share one device, taking turns. Each player fills their own column and the higher total wins. Online play across separate devices is planned.
Is there a printable score sheet?+
Yes. Our free printable score sheet has all fifteen categories, the bonus line and totals, with six columns for up to six players. Find it on the score sheet page.
What is a good Yatzy score?+
A casual game often lands between 150 and 200. Secure the upper bonus and a couple of strong lower-section results and a good player averages 220 to 270. The theoretical maximum is 374.
Does the game work on mobile?+
Yes. The game and the whole site are built mobile-first, so dice, holding and scoring all work with taps on phones and tablets as well as on desktop.
